The Issue

To: Professional Game Referees (Pro Ref), the Premier League and relevant football authorities.

We, the undersigned football supporters, call for a formal and transparent review of the controversial Erling Haaland goal awarded during the Manchester United vs Manchester City Premier League match at Old Trafford on 13 September 2026.

The goal, which ultimately decided the match, was initially ruled offside before being overturned following a VAR review. Pro Ref subsequently acknowledged that an error of judgement had been made, stating that the VAR failed to recognise the likely impact of Manchester City player Enzo Fernández’s offside position and should have recommended an on-field review.

This acknowledgement raises serious questions about the decision-making process and the level of scrutiny applied during one of the most significant moments of the match.

Football supporters deserve confidence that decisions are made fairly, consistently and in accordance with the Laws of the Game. When a refereeing body acknowledges an error that directly impacts the outcome of a major fixture, supporters should not be expected to simply accept the result without a proper examination of what went wrong.

Our demand:

We call upon Pro Ref and the Premier League to conduct a formal review of the Haaland goal, including the original on-field decision, the VAR review process and the involvement of Enzo Fernández in the build-up.

Publish a clear explanation of how the decision was reached and why the on-field referee was not recommended to review the incident.

Explain what measures will be taken to prevent similar errors from occurring in future Premier League matches.

Ensure that supporters and clubs receive appropriate transparency and accountability when significant officiating errors are acknowledged.

Why this matters?

This petition is not about hostility towards Manchester City or Erling Haaland. It is about fairness, accountability and the integrity of football.

VAR was introduced to help officials make more accurate decisions. When a goal is initially disallowed, subsequently awarded after a review, and then acknowledged by the refereeing body as an error, it is reasonable for supporters to demand answers.

The outcome of a football match should be determined by the players on the pitch and the correct application of the Laws of the Game. Not by an avoidable failure in the review process.

We respectfully ask the relevant authorities to take this matter seriously, conduct the requested review and provide a transparent response.

Sign this petition if you believe football supporters deserve accountability, consistency and fair officiating.

Fair decisions. Transparent VAR. Accountability for football.
