I don't like to call this a divisive issue; on the contrary, I think everyone sincerely wants to share their beliefs with people holding different beliefs because they care.  I want to share how I read the First Amendment:
 
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
 
I interpret it this way, "Congress shall make no law forcing beliefs on people, or prohibiting them from holding their beliefs."   In other words our government shall neither indoctrinate nor persecute based on beliefs and I believe it applies to not just laws, but to the absence of laws as well as court decisions and presidential orders, and very importantly how citizens interact with each other.  We are free to express ourselves, but not to indoctrinate or persecute others.  In my opinion, the government has to prove something beyond reasonable doubt before it forces it on the people.  While the Supreme Court can make a decision that effects the whole country, it has to be based on proof, not beliefs.  Laws should span all beliefs equally.
