The Issue
On August 4, 2026, wildlife in Colorado suffered when an uncollared male yearling wolf from the One Ear Pack was lethally removed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) agents. This young wolf was not simply a faceless predator; he was part of a special pack navigating life in Colorado. Unfortunately, this intervention by CPW followed a series of four confirmed depredation events on calves, despite the producers using non-lethal methods to detour the wolves.
The heartbreaking events leading to the wolf's demise began with the first depredation incident happening on June 29 in Jackson County, followed by additional events on July 26, July 31, and August 1, 2026, all in Grand County. These incidents highlight the ongoing conflict between wildlife and farming interests in regions that should be able to coexist.
We must address this issue by recognizing that wolves cannot differentiate between livestock and wildlife—they act on instinct, motivated by survival in their natural habitat. It's imperative that our management strategies evolve to respect and preserve the natural behaviors of these majestic creatures. Rather than responding with lethal force, we should invest in and implement more effective non-lethal deterrents that prevent predations while ensuring the wolves' right to live in their territories.
According to a study by the World Wildlife Fund, properly implemented non-lethal deterrents, such as livestock guardian dogs, fladry, and scare devices, have been shown to mitigate up to 95% of wolf-livestock conflicts. This data supports a push towards humane management options that protect both livestock interests and wildlife conservation.
This appeal is deeply personal, as it speaks to the need for harmony between humans and wildlife in Colorado—a landscape loved for its biodiversity and natural beauty. We call on Governor Jared Polis and Colorado Parks and Wildlife to cease the lethal removal of wolves and commit to non-lethal management solutions that consider the wolves' integral role in Colorado's ecosystem.
