For a while there, it looked like Coles and Woolies were listening to you all when they announced they would be imposing drought levies on some lines of milk. But the problem is, it’s not going to change the situation for struggling Aussie dairy farmers.
In fact, it could make things worse.
The application of the levy to only some brands of milk meant dairy farmers could expect only an extra half-a-cent to 1 cent per litre, well short of the 10 cents you’ve been calling for when you got behind this petition. What’s worse, this selective application of the levy on Coles and Woolies branded milk could draw some customers currently buying branded milk to the cheaper drought milk. Branded milk that is often owned by farmers cooperatives.
That’s right, these big supermarkets are just driving people to buy their Coles and Woolies branded milk. It’s dairy double dipping, and we think it’s a bit off.
The farmers are absolutely devastated because they realise there's been a con job done on them, and on people like you who have got behind this important campaign.
In the last few days, the ABC and Daily Mail has picked up on this con job. These big supermarkets are realising they might not be able to get away with this. This shows that our pressure is working, but we can’t let Coles and Woolies off the hook with lip service.
More than 100,000 of you have signed this petition. Can you take it to the next level and share it? We need to send a message to Coles and Woolworths: we need a 10 cent per litre levy on ALL milk.
Anything else is just bull.
