Petition calling on Minister for Transport to implement AIRSR Recommendations for Wexford
The Issue
We the undersigned note
- The 2023 All Ireland Rail Strategy Report (AIRSR) recommends the reinstatement of the South Wexford Railway, the construction of a new railway station at the South End of Wexford Town and that access to Dublin should be via Waterford, Kilkenny and Carlow.
- The reinstatement of the line was prioritised to have been completed by 2030.
The Draft 2026 national ports strategy proposes Rosslare Europort will not receive its rail freight connection until 2050. - The Department of Transport has ignored the case that the AIRSR identifies for reinstatement of the South Wexford line in its prioritisation of projects.
- The expansion of the DART to Wicklow will only further reduce the quality of the service to Rosslare Europort.
- The time frame commitments given by Irish Rail to repair the Barrow Bridge have not been met.
We call on the Minister for Transport and Climate Change, Darragh O’Brien TD &
Minister for State and the Department of Transport, Séan Canney TD, to
(A) commit their support for the objectives of AIRSR within the time frames identified by the consultants in relation to rail services to Co Wexford to assure passengers and potential freight users at Rosslare Europort of a fast efficient service over an upgraded Barrow Bridge to Dublin to connecting onwards to the WRC
(B) Commit to a continued through service from Co Wexford to Dublin.
(C) Additional departures to arrive in Rosslare Europort early morning and from Rosslare Europort mid afternoon.
