YOUR INVITED! The St. Michael’s Church Preservation Society together with the Mary Help of Christians Sodality will honor St. John Bosco with a Mass and free social tomorrow Tuesday Jan. 31 beginning at 6:00 pm. Msgr. Michael Coyne will celebrate Mass for the parish and neighborhood followed by a free social in Quaremba Hall. It is fitting that this feast day comes during Catholic Schools Week in all parishes across the United States. St. John Bosco was the founder of the Order of Salesians that helped establish St. Michael’s Church and School. He was from Turin, Italy when it was becoming heavily industrialized and forgetting the needs of the young. As a new priest and with the help of his mother, he started housing 6 boys in 1857. By 1862 he was providing accommodations for over 600. By the time of his death in 1888 the Order he founded had expanded to 768 religious members and today the Salesians are active worldwide. A full wall painting of “Don Bosco”- as he was known- is on the east wall of the choir loft in the Church. Fr. Quaremba, who established St. Michael’s Church and School, was especially dedicated to both him and his counterpart St. Maria Mazzarello, as the best model for teaching the boys and girls of Atlantic City.
