January Update --The St. Michael’s Church Preservation Society Letter from Pastor Fr. Jon Thomas, Architecture Talk at St. Nicholas of Tolentine, and Jan. 31 Feast of St. John Bosco Letter from Fr. Jon to Parishioners Fr. Jon’s recent letter titled “Swimming Toward Land” is yet another important message to supporters of The St. Michael’s Church Preservation Society that describes St. Michael’s Church and campus as firmly within the umbrella and future plans of the city-wide parish of St. Monica. For this we are pleased. The mission and success of the Parish is now important to the future preservation of St. Michael’s Church and campus and visa versa. Fr. Jon also says in his letter, “St. Michael’s campus ... is not a significant (financial) burden to maintain”. The full text of the letter is available at savestmikes on Facebook. The SMCPS sees St. Michael’s Church and campus as an irreplaceable asset for the future success and stability of the Parish. So we ask all supporters of St. Michael’s Church -- descendants of Italian immigrants or new immigrants, graduates of St. Michael’s School, admirers of the art, history, traditions, and values of St. Michael’s Church or Ducktown neighbors-- to continue your support of our new larger family in Atlantic City. For certain with your support the SMCPS will keep its focus on its mission within this new framework. Notes Available from Architectural Talk at St. Nicholas of Tolentine The December 17 2016 presentation on the Architecture of St. Nicholas of Tolentine Church by Dr. John Calabrese, a graduate of St. Michael’s School and now a Professor of Art History at Texas Women’s University are now available on facebook at savestmikes.. The talk highlighted the Architecture of St. Nicholas of Tolentine Church that is now with St. Michael’s Church and Star of the Sea Church part of St. Monica’s Parish in Atlantic City. St. Nicks was built in 1905 and was added to the National Register of Historic Landmarks in 2001 and is well known as an excellent example of neo-Romanesque Architecture in Southern New Jersey. This presentation sponsored by the St. Michael’s Church Preservation Society is a follow up to a successful talk last December on the Art and History of St. Michael’s Church. Feast Day Celebration of St. John Bosco on Jan. 31 at St. Michael’s Church The SMCPS and the Mary Help of Christian Sodality will partner to celebrate the second annual feast day of St. John Bosco on Tuesday Jan. 31. A special Mass celebrated by Fr. Brady will begin at 6:00 pm followed by a Social with music and food in Quaremba Hall. St. John Bosco and St. Mary Mazzarrello, whose images and statues are in located throughout the Church, founded the Salesian Order of Priests and Sisters that became the lifeblood of St. Michael’s Church and School beginning in 1912. More details of the celebration will be sent to you soon. All friends and families are invited to attend this celebration of Catholic Education.
