The St. Michael’s Church Preservation Society is pleased to invite you to a special Mass and Social at St. Michael’s Church this Friday, May 13 at 7:00 pm to honor St. Maria Mazzarella , co-founder of the Salesian Sisters.
St. Maria Mazzarello and St. Don Bosco were the inspiration behind St. Michael’s Church and School. The Salesian Sisters taught at St. Michael’s School for decades and St. Maria Mazzarello is given a special place of honor for her contributions - with her name inscribed over the left entrance-way to St. Michael’s Church. St. Mazzarello worked closely with St. Don Bosco to offer girls in late 19th century Italy a solid Catholic education that is the hallmark of the Salesian Order to this day. The first Salesian Sisters arrived in the United States via New Jersey in 1908 and in 1912 helped Fr. Quaremba open St. Michael’s School. From there, Salesian youth and outreach programs have spread to Canada and throughout New England, as well as other parts of the country, including Florida, Louisiana, Texas, and California. As of 2016, they number over 14,000 members in 89 different countries, and on five continents.
A free neighborhood social will follow Mass in Quaremba Hall thanks to the efforts of the Mary Help of Christians Sodality and donations of fish and sandwich platters by local business owners.
