Petition Against the Proposed Renaming of the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon Universi
The Issue
To:
The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,
The National Assembly,
The Federal Ministry of Education,
Subject: Safeguarding the National Identity and Legacy of the University of Abuja
We, concerned citizens and stakeholders in Nigeria’s educational and national development, hereby write to express our opposition to the proposed renaming of the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University. While we recognize and appreciate the contributions of General Yakubu Gowon to Nigeria’s history and leadership, we firmly believe that this proposal is not in the best interest of the institution or the nation as a whole.
The University of Abuja holds a unique and irreplaceable place in Nigeria’s educational and cultural landscape. Renaming it would have significant implications that deserve careful consideration. Below, we outline the reasons why this change should not be approved:
1. Preserving the Historical Significance of the University of Abuja
The University of Abuja symbolizes national unity, diversity, and the federal character of Nigeria’s higher education system. Its name reflects the institution’s inclusive purpose to serve students from all parts of the country, fostering a sense of collective national identity. Renaming it risks diluting this symbolic representation and shifting focus from its foundational goals.
2. Protecting Institutional Identity and Legacy
Over the years, the University of Abuja has developed a distinct identity, academic culture, and reputation recognized nationally and globally. A name change could disrupt this legacy, causing confusion among alumni, students, and international collaborators, while undermining the university’s branding and reputation in academic and professional circles.
3. Avoiding a Politically Motivated Precedent
Renaming the university after an individual, however notable, could set a dangerous precedent, leading to future proposals to rename other institutions in honour of various political or historical figures. This risks politicizing educational institutions and detracting from their core mission of providing quality education.
4. Avoiding Unnecessary Financial and Administrative Burdens*
Implementing a name change would involve significant financial costs, including the redesign of signage, academic materials, websites, and administrative records. These funds would be better allocated to addressing pressing needs such as infrastructure development, faculty recruitment, and student welfare.
5. Aligning with National Educational Policy
Any decision to rename an institution should be guided by a well-defined national education policy, taking into account the broader historical, cultural, and educational priorities of the nation. Without such a framework, the proposal appears arbitrary and could be perceived as politically motivated.
OUR RECOMMENDATION
While we respect and honour General Yakubu Gowon’s contributions to Nigeria, we propose that alternative means of recognition be pursued, such as:
- Establishing memorials, scholarships, or academic building in his name.
- Naming new buildings, or programs after him.
- Creating initiatives that promote national unity, aligning with his legacy of leadership.
Conclusion
The University of Abuja is more than just an academic institution; it is a symbol of Nigeria’s unity and shared purpose. Renaming it would compromise its foundational ideals and national significance. We urge the Federal Government and the National Assembly to reject this proposal and instead explore other ways to honour General Yakubu Gowon without altering the legacy and identity of this esteemed university.
