"New regulations that ban the feeding of feral chickens and cats from Friday, 3 Feb., carry a maximum penalty of a fine of up to $500,000 and/or four years in prison for people who repeatedly feed them." Unfortunately, even despite this 1) being directly counterintuitive to the motive behind this decision (I.e. trying to protect the local species like iguanas) in the sense that without the steady feeding some cat colonies and chicken packs have been receiving for potentially years, they will now be forced to feed on other animals which will include these protected species. 2) We should also consider the precedent this sets for us as an island because as of the 3rd Febuary, 2023 we are officially ranking feeding stray animals above more dangerous criminal acts like children molestation and even rape (as a majority of these kind of deplorable people often receive much less in terms of not only consequence in general but a terrifying lack of attention from the government.) 3) We will now be not only actively increasing the cat population (as even well-established organizations like C.A.R.E or Feline Friends are unable to continue their practice of spaying/vaccinating these strays, we will see the already chronically overpopulated Humane Society (which has been such a long-standing issue the Government again choses to ignore in favor of pushing these poorly thought out regulstions) break britches to try and keep up with these new changes; we will also see these stray cats be sicker and more of a threat to public health then they have been in years. ALL THIS TO SAY: By actually applying this regulation we are not only causing a huge domino effect leading to a wide array of more complicated problems but abandoning our local motto of "Cayman Kind" and actually criminalizing the very act of helping.  As not only a cat lover but a former rescuer of stray kittens, I can't even explain how important it is to fight against this not only for the stray cats and chickens, but for the same local species they are claiming this regulation is supposed to help protect. The much more effective and honestly more humane alternatives have been staring Government in the eyes through all the multiple and miscellaneous news reports and social media posts detailing the Humane Society (THE ONLY ANIMAL SHELTER ON ISLAND) chronically overpopulation, insufficient housing and lack of funds that they have continued to ignore. Instead of criminalizing caring, we should be thinking about not only creating more animal shelters but help these existing animal-focused organizations accumulate more funds to potentially spread their reach, upgrade their physical facilities or...if that is not feasible, maybe even at the least make the Government reevaluate this regulation to not only avoid the huge domino effect this decision will have but hopefully it will encourage them to finally make some real changes for this decade long issue.
