We, the undersigned of Gorse Road and Montrose Close, hereby petition against the ongoing issue of school parking that has been causing numerous challenges and inconveniences for the residents and visitors of our neighbourhood.

The influx of vehicles associated with school parking has created severe disruptions and safety hazards for our community. Each school day, our road is congested with parked vehicles, obstructing traffic flow, limiting access for emergency vehicles, and posing significant risks to pedestrians and cyclists. Additionally, the excessive noise and litter generated by these parked vehicles further diminish our quality of life.

Traffic Congestion: The presence of parked vehicles impedes the smooth flow of traffic, leading to delays and frustrations for residents. There have been numerous occasions where access in and out of driveways has been blocked off. Upon confronting the drivers, residents have been faced with abusive behaviour. Often is the case that parents congregate in small groups after dropping their children off or before collecting them.

Safety Concerns: Narrow roadways and obscured sightlines increase the likelihood of accidents and endanger the safety of pedestrians, especially children walking to and from school. There have been several accidents where cars have been damaged and we don’t want any child to get injured in any way. Additionally, most cars park with two wheels on the pavements which hinders access for pushchairs and wheelchair users.

Limited Access: Emergency responders face challenges navigating our roads due to restricted access caused by parked vehicles, potentially delaying critical response times.

Noise and Litter: The noise generated by the movement of vehicles and the accumulation of litter in the vicinity of parked vehicles contribute to the deterioration of our neighbourhood’s aesthetics and tranquillity. There have been instances of parents allowing their children to urinate in the vicinity of the school gates.

In light of these pressing concerns, we urge the relevant authorities to take immediate action to address the issue of school parking on Gorse Road and Montrose Close. Potential solutions include, but are not limited to:

Frequent patrols by Traffic Enforcement Officers and PCSO’s: As mentioned above, driveways are often parked across and double yellow lines are always parked on. Currently, Traffic Enforcement Officers are seen bi-yearly which is not as frequent as it needs to be.

Alternative Transportation Options: Encouraging the use of alternative transportation methods such as carpooling, walking, or cycling to reduce the reliance on individual vehicles for school transportation.

Collaborative Efforts: Collaborating with school administration, parents, and the local authority to explore alternative parking arrangements and promote responsible parking practices.

Others school in the area have a member of staff positioned near the school gates at drop off and collection times. The Grove Primary Academy does not appear to do this. This would help a lot. Additionally, the introduction of signs on the school gates reminding parents to park respectfully and responsibly could be utilised as well as ‘No Parking’ signs which look like school children in the vicinity of the double yellow lines on Gorse Road and Montrose Close.

We call upon our local authority officials and school administration to prioritise the safety and wellbeing of our community by addressing the issue of school parking on Gorse Road and Montrose Close. We urge swift and decisive action to implement effective solutions that mitigate the negative impacts of school parking on our neighbourhood.
