End "Drive-Thru" Graduations: A Petition Against MSMU's 2022 Graduation Format
The Issue
*Petition began at 5 PM, March 18, 2022*
On behalf of the Mount Saint Mary's University graduating class of 2022, this serves as the petition against the University's current graduation format for this upcoming May ceremony. As of March 18, 2022, the graduates' families are to remain in their vehicles for the entirety of the ceremony. In addition, two vehicles only are granted per student.
Mount Saint Mary's University is home to the UNSTOPPABLE, those who are encouraged by the University to embody grit, determination, and bravery. With recent developments in COVID-19 policies, we feel it to be our mission to voice our concerns with courage to our MSMU officials. We request that both the current location of the ceremony, Exposition Park (3986 S. Hoover Street, Los Angeles, 90037), and vehicle policy be changed. The students deserve a proper graduation in which their dedicated families can watch their graduates cross the stage from comfortable seating.
We also request the location be changed to somewhere in similar scale and style to previous graduation years. A parking lot graduation is unrepresentative and disrespectful to the dedication offered by students to both our coursework and the University for four years. Previously, MSMU ceremonies have been scheduled to be held at locations such as the Los Angeles Convention Center and the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall. We understand an indoor ceremony may not be probable, but with both campuses being home to beautiful views and ample parking, a location change is possible.
