The Issue

As concerned citizens of Namibia, we deeply troubled by the government's proposal to make digital identification mandatory. This concern is shared by countless others who worry about the potential consequences of such a policy.

Our beautiful and diverse country has always placed a strong emphasis on the rights and privacy of its people. However, with the introduction of a mandatory digital ID system, there is a fear that our private lives will be monitored and controlled in ways that are unprecedented. Such systems have the potential to infringe on personal freedoms and could lead to the marginalization of various groups in our society who may not have easy access to the technology required.

The government's push for digital ID is said to enhance security and streamline administrative processes. However, the benefits must be weighed against the significant risks it poses. Countries around the world have faced challenges with digital ID systems, including breaches of privacy and data protection issues. For example, India's Aadhaar system, one of the world's largest biometric ID databases, has faced numerous security and privacy challenges which serve as cautionary tales for other nations considering similar systems.

Moreover, Namibia's current infrastructure may not support such a system efficiently. With inconsistent access to technology and the internet across the nation, many Namibians could be disadvantaged or even excluded from essential services if digital ID becomes a requirement. This could exacerbate existing inequalities, leaving the most vulnerable without means to prove their identity.

Instead of enforcing a blanket mandatory policy, we propose that digital ID systems remain voluntary and supplemented by robust data protection laws to safeguard against misuse. We also recommend thorough consultations with all societal sectors, ensuring any implementation considers the diverse needs and concerns of all Namibians.

Therefore, we urge His Excellency the President of the Republic of Namibia, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, to reconsider the decision to mandate digital identification. Let us seek a path that respects the privacy, rights, and needs of every Namibian.

Please join us in signing this petition to show our government that we stand united in the defense of our freedoms and privacy.
