KEY CONCERNS

Safety & Environmental:

- Lithium batteries pose fire risks that are extremely difficult to extinguish

- Lithium extraction depletes/contaminates water sources and harms Indigenous communities in South America

- EMF emissions from wireless transmitters have unproven safety

Legal & Privacy:

- AMI meters collect hourly water-usage data that reveals no one is home / household routines

- Water By-law 71-19 only authorizes register readings — NOT telemetry, interval data, or granular logs

- No legal authority exists for wireless data-harvesting devices in private homes

 Cybersecurity:

- Recent breaches in Hamilton (2 breaches) and Nova Scotia expose vulnerabilities

- Neptune (manufacturer) admits AMI systems are "enticing targets for hackers"

  LEGAL GAP

The Town/Region has NOT identified any by-law section authorizing:

- AMI transmitters

- Lithium battery-powered RF/EMF devices 

- Hourly consumption data storage

- Telemetry endpoints inside homes

 DEMANDED ALTERNATIVES

Residents must be allowed to opt for:

- Non-data-harvesting meters

- Photographic self-reported readings

- One annual inspection (fee 0 ≤$60)

PETITION REQUESTS

1. Suspend mandatory AMI installation until opt-out/manual read is provided

2. Allow residents to retain/switch to non-AMI meters

3. Accept photographic readings and annual inspections

4. Conduct full Privacy Impact Assessment

5. Disclose specific by-law authority for AMI

6. Guarantee no disconnections for refusal

WHERE IS THE PROOF?

My friends, I  ask where is the proof that the batteries won’t catch on fire? 

Where is the proof that the meter’s electromagnetic frequency radiation does not harm our body’s cells rather than just warming the skin? 

If our daily usage of water is not in danger of being hacked, where is the privacy assessment? No one needs to know if I’m home or not.

If the smart meter and our data is safe, why did on the final installation notification  threaten us with a fine?
