Petition Against High-Rise Development on Beachfront

The Issue

Panorama of Gordon's Bay beachfront showing the height of the buildings.

We, the residents and supporters of Gordon’s Bay, strongly oppose the proposed development on Erf 3068 that seeks to bypass existing building height restrictions on Beach Road. Not only to heighten the building restrictions but actually waive it. This development threatens the character, economy, and environment of our beloved coastal village.

Key Concerns:

🔹 Loss of Village Charm & Tourism Appeal
Gordon’s Bay is cherished for its small-town atmosphere and natural beauty, attracting both residents and visitors. A high-rise development will permanently alter this, replacing our scenic beachfront with towering buildings similar to Strand’s Beach Road.

🔹 Negative Impact on Local Businesses
Many businesses along Beach Road rely on the unique ambiance of our bay. The presence of a high-rise will disrupt their visibility, reduce foot traffic, and threaten their livelihoods.

🔹 Infrastructure Strain & Parking Issues
Despite the developer’s promises, our infrastructure is already under pressure. The addition of 18+ residential units will increase water, electricity, and sewage demands, as well as worsen traffic congestion and parking shortages - especially during peak seasons.

🔹 Environmental Concerns
The area is home to protected Milkwood trees, a significant part of our coastal ecosystem and heritage. Construction activities risk damaging these and other natural elements that define our beachfront.

🔹 Decline in Property Values
Homes in the Old Village will lose their ocean views and sunlight, leading to a decline in property values. Instead of enhancing the area, this development will devalue what makes Gordon’s Bay a sought-after place to live.

🔹 A Dangerous Precedent
If this height restriction is lifted, it opens the floodgates for more high-rise developments, leading to an irreversible transformation of Gordon’s Bay into another overdeveloped coastal strip.

We Stand Together to Protect Gordon’s Bay
We urge the relevant authorities to reject the request to waive building height restrictions and preserve the character of our village. We ask all residents, business owners, and visitors who value Gordon’s Bay’s unique charm to sign this petition and make their voices heard.
