Thank you so much for the 100 000+ signatures and support for this movement. This movement belongs to all of us and I encourage everyone to continue sharing it on social media so that we raise more awareness around this. Many women have shared their stories of being stolen from, being physically assaulted, sexually assaulted, kidnapped, etc. it has been very painful to hear all of them. This is an even bigger reason to continue fighting for the vetting/verification and for all e-hailing companies to undergo strict regulation.
So far Gareth Taylor has responded following the outrage and this is what he had to say:
"Bolt is aware of the incident in which a young woman suffered a terribly traumatic experience in Cosmo City. We have engaged with her several times, and we are fully co-operating with the Honeydew police station in their investigation into the incident, as this is where she has opened a case. The implicated driver has been suspended from the platform and will only be reinstated if he is fully exonerated by the SAPS.
This permit is only granted to applicants who pass a full criminal background check completed by the authorities. Only persons with a clear record are permitted to join the platform. Any driver found to be renting their profile to any other party, or allowing any unauthorised person to use their profile for any reason, will be removed from the platform permanently. Bolt condemns any form of sexual harassment or violence of any kind directed towards e-hailing passengers because it believes that every South African has the right to move around without risk of harm, intimidation or coercion, or fear of harassment, injury, or death."
This is the same position that Bolt has presented in previous incidents regarding this very same issue. The fact that this continues to happen, shows that Bolt is not taking this seriously. They need to be better regulated and vetting is the first step. With this petition, we intend on submitting it to Minister Fikile Mbalula on stricter regulations around e-hailing services and to further engage bolt on creating a better system to afford women with a safer service.
