With thousands of signatures behind this petition, we are formally bringing this issue to the attention of the European Commission.

Vjosë-Nartë is a unique and irreplaceable ecosystem of international importance and a true international asset. It is part of a wider ecological network that supports migratory bird routes across Europe and preserves fragile wetland and lagoon habitats that cannot be replaced once lost.

This area holds exceptional ecological and cultural value, and its protection is not only a national responsibility but also a shared European and global obligation. Any degradation of this ecosystem would represent an irreversible loss for biodiversity, climate resilience, and future generations.

At the same time, many citizens in Albania feel that their concerns have not been adequately reflected in national decision-making, despite repeated public opposition and growing alarm over developments that risk causing permanent environmental damage.

For this reason, we are calling on the European Commission to closely monitor the situation, initiate an independent environmental assessment, and ensure full compliance with European environmental standards and obligations. We also urge coordinated action with Albanian authorities to strengthen the long-term protection of Vjosë-Nartë as part of Europe’s shared natural heritage.

At the same time, we still directly call on the Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama, to stop this environmental destruction and to choose the path that serves the best interest of the Albanian people, by protecting Vjosë-Nartë as a national treasure rather than allowing irreversible damage to this unique ecosystem.
