Designate Jackson Park a Cultural Heritage Landscape.

The Issue

Jackson Park is the environmental jewel of Peterborough Ontario. A unique wooded parkland of mixed deciduous and coniferous trees surrounding scenic Jackson Creek and a section of the Trans Canada Trail.

My petition, on this site, in 2013, to stop a the City building a bridge for a major new roadway through the heart of its old growth forrest garnered over 6000 signatures. This show of support went a long way towards stopping this action by the city.

But the City staff have continued to chip away at the sanctity of this natural beauty. With the completion of the Lily Lake Development on its east rim the park will be completely surrounded by subdivisions. This latest development will eventually house close to 6000 inhabitants and include two large storm water ponds, which will add to the demands on Jackson Creek.

During Covid-19 usage of the park increased dramatically as many rediscovered the physical and mental health benefits of of a walk in nature. Many discovered the park for the first time and have become aware how important it is to preserve for future generations.

In 2019 the Peterborough Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee recommended that Jackson Park be designated a Natural Heritage Landscape. This designation would protect the park from further development. This recommendation was sent to City Staff well over two years ago and has NOT been acted upon. It is coming to council again soon, please join us in demanding this protective designation for this natural gem.
