With grassroots football returning this week many teams have returned to see terrible football pitch conditions, these include; destroyed goals, disgusting changing room facilities, ditches and holes around the pitch, massive area of dried mud with no grass around goal mouths with rocks and pegs inside, unmowed grass and patches of mud surrounding the pitches.

Playing football in these conditions causes injuries and can easily cause players harm, missing work, spending time in A&E and in some cases injuries needing operations, also causing matches to be postponed or abandoned due to long grass, no lines or inadequate pitches this meaning fines for clubs for things out of their control.

The FA and local councils have made it clear that they want to support grassroots football, but why would anyone want to get involved if they have to play in these conditions? Risking the chance of a very avoidable injury.

The average cost of a pitch for a Sunday league game starts at around £70 which includes changing rooms which have clearly not been cleaned since the COVID pandemic. With this money I am sure most teams would expect a pitch which is up to standard or would at least be playable upon for the whole season.

Regular grass cuts being the main concern and not enough pre season venues for hire…
