Recent research has shown that college students are suffering from food insecurity. The Hungry to Learn papers published from the HOPE Lab in Wisconsin showed that approximately 1 in 5 students of higher education reported being food insecure. This is not that different in Vermont. A recent study of the University of Vermont showed that 25% of undergraduate students at UVM were food insecure in the spring of 2017, and 20% of medical and graduate students were food insecure in the fall of 2017. This is well above the national food insecurity rate of 12.3% and Vermont's rate of 10.1%. SNAP benefits or Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, are almost impossible for college students to apply for and receive. I am asking Vermont representative Peter Welch to co-sign the College Student Hunger Act of 2017, which aims to amend the Food and Nutrition Act of 2008 to make SNAP available to college students. I am also asking Vermont Senators to start a bill in the Senate to also amend the Food and Nutrition Act of 2008 to make SNAP available to college students.
