Save Nauru rape victim Nazanin's life: bring her to Australia for urgent treatment
The issue
In May, 23 year old asylum seeker Nazanin was raped in Nauru. She had been visiting friends on the island and was making her way back to the camp. Three months later, Nazanin has tried to commit suicide twice, once by cutting and another with a bottle of insecticide. Six weeks ago, she was transferred to a separate compound away from her family and has since stopped eating. The local medical providers promised to get her specialist treatment in Australia. But the government has refused. The crime has not been investigated, and witness statements have not even been taken. Since the Abbott government came into power, four asylum seekers have taken their own lives in detention. Don't let Nazanin be number five. Sign this petition - tell Peter Dutton, Minister for Immigration, that Australians want Nazanin to receive the care that she needs, here in Australia. The government may think that we don't care about asylum seekers, that their lives are meaningless and that crimes perpetrated against them can be dismissed, but that's not the Australian way. Nazanin is a young woman with her whole life ahead of her, let's get her the treatment she needs and spare her family the anguish of another life lost in detention.
