Make Room for Syrian Refugees in Australia Now

Make Room for Syrian Refugees in Australia Now

The issue

We have all seen the terrible images of Aylan, a young child fleeing the war in Syria, who drowned at sea in his family's attempt to find refuge. Here in Australia we have room and the capacity to take in more Syrian refugees. The civil war in Syria has claimed over 300,000 lives since it started in 2011. Over 7 million Syrians have been displaced and there seems to be little international push to end the war - which would, of course, help the refugee issue facing the world at this moment.

People keep saying, "what can we do?" We can take in more Syrian refugees immediately. The UK has just decided to do that. Let's ask the Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, Peter Dutton, to create 7,000 spaces for Syrian refugees on top of what we already take in. It's a small step, but it means safety and life for 7,000 people who will be eternally grateful to Australia for remembering that we are all connected, regardless of race, creed or religion.

Let's open our arms wide and do something now!
