The Department of Immigration and the Migration Review Tribunal told us that me, my wife Tonima Sultana’s permanent residency visas had been denied because the additional taxpayer-funded health and education costs associated with our Australian-born son Fayyad was too high.
We note that this has been calculated on a two-year-old assessment of Fayyad, which found his autism to be "mild to moderate".
Medical experts last year assessed the four-year-old's condition to be "mild" and estimated the additional costs of his development to be less than $30,000 throughout his childhood,.
Under the department's "one out, all out" system, having Fayyad's visa denied now means that our whole family will have to return home, even though we have lived here for more than 10 years. I am a licensed Real Estate Agent and principle of my own Real Estate firm, my wife is a hairdresser and we want to live in Australia. We meet all the legislative requirements for the grant of the visa, but due to my child’s illness, we have to leave.
