Keep Gano St. Exit & Revise Henderson Bridge Plan

Keep Gano St. Exit & Revise Henderson Bridge Plan
The Issue
We're asking that the RI DOT and the cities of Providence and East Providence revise The Washington Bridge Rehabilitation and Redevelopment Project. The current plan is to permanently close the Gano St. exit off of I-195 and to build a new exit on the East Providence side of the Seekonk River. The new exit would route traffic along Waterfront Drive in East Providence while taking the existing Henderson Bridge from 4 lanes down to 2.
The addition of the new off-ramp and focus on development of the Waterfront Drive area are welcome additions. However, this will create additional traffic both in and out of Providence over the Henderson Bridge. By closing the Gano St. exit on I-195 West, all traffic destined for East Providence and the East Side of Providence will be funneled over the Henderson Bridge, causing major delays upon entering Wayland Square. To leave the Gano Street off-ramp open would allow two options, resulting in less congestion overall.
We're urging the RI DOT and the Mayors of Providence and East Providence meet with the business owners and residents that will be impacted by this change before moving forward.
