Wes Gibbins is the driving force of the show. However, he has become a divisive character. Some fans are vocal about disliking him online. Maybe that's the reason why the writers decide to kill him. Or perhaps it's just for the shock factor. There's no concrete reason to kill him. The writers are not doing justice to his story. 

We, the fans, love the show and watch the show because of Wes Gibbins/Alfred Enoch. Killing him off is like Meredith Grey off Grey's Anatomy. There's no reason to continue watching now.
