Rabbit.org - Petco’s Troubling History with Rabbit Sales: Broken Promises and Continued Exploitation

(This petition is not fundraising)
Despite PETCO'S “2008 promise and philosophy to do the right thing”; the company has broken that promise.  To make matters even worse, PETCO will be purchasing “Teddy Bear Teacup and Miniature Rabbits" (Dwarf rabbits) from breeders to sell in several of their stores.  By doing so, it appears PETCO is unethically responsible for promoting unhealthy rabbit breeding as well as duping the public to purchase them.  As cute as they may look, you should refrain from purchasing Teddy Bear rabbits for ethical reasons, because these little rabbits have a problematic breeding history. Dwarf rabbits that are bred with a round, short, compact body shape suffer in a different way. The long digestive tract of a rabbit is squashed and this causes digestive disorders.  Rabbits require treatment from Exotic vets who are very expensive.

PETCO is only offering male rabbits, what will the fate be for females born in back yard breeding operations?  Repeatedly used as breeding does until deemed worthless or culled as a new born baby for being of no value?   *Teddy Bear/Miniature Rabbits are in fact - just Dwarf Rabbits that can be adopted at shelters and at every rabbit rescue across the states, despite their false claims*.

PETCO stores state the baby bunnies are 3 months old and neutered.  According to VCA Animal Hospitals: Male rabbits can be neutered as early as four to six months of age. Many veterinarians recommend neutering at six to eight months of age to allow for proper bone growth.  It appears PETCO is also unethically neutering baby bunnies at a young age for profit/sales.

In 2022 American Humane certified PETCO with their seal of approval and are stated to be overseeing audits of the Teddy Bear Teacup and Miniature Rabbits (Dwarf rabbits).  Unethical - Please contact AH and let them know that neither Petco or American Humane is acting in a manner that is unacceptable while promoting extreme/selective breeding of unhealthy rabbits for sale as well as contributing to the ongoing issue of overpopulation/unwanted rabbits.  info@americanhumane.org / (800) 227-4645

Despite Rabbit Rescues being overwhelmed and over capacity with dumped and neglected rabbits, despite shelters being full of unwanted pet rabbits that are euthanized all day every day, despite the out of control dumping of pet rabbits in the wild all across the country - PETCO plans to restart rabbit sales which will appallingly ensure more mistreatment and death to rabbits.  PROFIT OVER ANIMAL WELFARE

We the petitioners respectfully request PETCO honor their promise.  BOYCOTT PETCO selling rabbits - voice your opinion, boycott their store and products until they honor their commitment below:

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT & PHILANTHROPY:
"Petco is committed to helping adoptable pets find forever homes. Petco has never sold cats or dogs and, in 2008, we stopped selling rabbits as well. We believe in a "Think Adoption First" philosophy, which means we encourage anyone looking to add a new pet to their family to consider adopting a homeless animal, rather than purchasing one. As a result, we seek to increase the number of pets adopted into loving homes and decrease pet euthanasia. In partnership with Petco Love (formerly Petco Foundation), Petco stores host adoption events throughout the year where new pet parents can receive tips on how to care for their pets from Petco representatives, learn about local pet adoption efforts, and most importantly, meet adoptable pets".

Petco is once again contributing to the suffering and death of thousands of unwanted domestic rabbits with plans to sell them in their stores.  Sadly this unethical business plan will take place in the states that have not prohibited the retail sell of rabbits.
