Stop selling Betta fish in pet stores.

Stop selling Betta fish in pet stores.
The Issue
Betta fish are kept in very tiny compartments, unable to swim. This is very unnatural and in humane. We need to stop the capture, breeding and inhumane selling of these creature that are used to having ample space to swim. If not sold, after months in a very restricted, unstimulating environment, these fish are fed to bigger fish. Usually, they just die of unhealthy causes. Misconceptions about their care and biology can lead to them being some of the most commonly mistreated fish in the pet trade. Bettas don’t thrive in tiny puddles of water in the wild. Their natural diet is insects and larva, not roots in a vase for decoration. Like other fish, they need plants and caves to explore. Data from research at Ghent University in Belgium has shown that too-small tanks and lack of environmental enichment harm the quality of life of bettas. They are better off in a larger tank with companionship fish that it gets along with and also with the room for the option of avoiding them. Veterinarians now believe that fish are capable of being happy and unhappy, and experience pain and suffering. Unless these pet stores are accommodating with more room for hiding from other fish while putting them in a tank with compatible fish, they should not be confining these fish to such an inhumane environment.
