Persuade the Mayor to Illuminate Marble Arch and Oxford Street for Diwali

The Issue

As a Hindu, I honour Diwali, our largest and most significant festival. It is an auspicious occasion for us, marking the celebrated return of Lord Ram from his 14-year exile. Upon his return, his entire hometown was brilliantly lit up with candles and fireworks  to cast out negativity ,and welcome in light and love everywhere

Such is the symbolism of light during Diwali; it is not simply aesthetic but deeply meaningful. It is with this reverence for the festival of light that I call on our Mayor to illuminate two of London's iconic landmarks, Marble Arch and Oxford Street, in observance of Diwali for the entire month of October. Together with a firework display at the Marble Arch on a Sunday in October so people can attend well and enjoy the celebrations.

London prides itself as a multicultural city, with nearly 8.9% of the population identifying as Indian, Pakistani, or Bangladeshi according to the last UK census. About 897,000 of London's population associated themselves with the Hindu faith as per the Office of National Statistics. Therefore, it is essential for the city to reflect this diversity in its public celebrations.

Lighting up Marble Arch and Oxford Street for Diwali not only illustrates respect and recognition for the Hindu community but also promotes cultural understanding and celebrates the multicultural fabric of our city.

By this petition, we request the Mayor to create an all-embracing symbol of unity and multicultural representation during our most sacred time of the year. We look forward to witnessing our tradition shining brightly in the heart of London.
