The Issue

For many of us, the rising cost of eggs paired with the national egg shortage has become more than a casual concern. I, just like others, have felt the impact of this issue on my daily life and budget. Backyard chickens could provide a sustainable and cost-effective solution for many families.

Backyard chickens not only provide fresh eggs but also contribute to the local ecosystem by controlling pests. According to the American Poultry Association, hens can lay between 200-300 eggs per year, ample supply for an average family (American Poultry Association). Additionally, local small-scale egg production can reduce the demand pressure on commercial suppliers and potentially alleviate the national egg shortage.

Therefore, we urge our local government to reconsider current zoning laws that prohibit the keeping of backyard chickens. By adapting our regulations to support sustainable, local food sources, we can benefit our families, communities, and the economy. Please sign this petition to voice your support for this change.
