Permit Support Animals in Tower Blocks

The Issue

For over four years, my faithful canine companion has been a pivotal part of my family. As a support animal, my dog has provided me with immense emotional assistance, helping me navigate through personal hardships. Now, due to Southend Council’s regulations, I face the heartbreaking prospect of rehoming her. This situation is not only distressing on a personal level but also highlights an unfair policy that affects many residents like me.

Despite having the backing of my doctor, the authorities at Stars the Vets, Eastwood Councillor, and even my local MP, the Council insists on upholding a rule that disallows dogs in tower blocks, except for house cats. This seems irrational, especially considering that our tower block has a communal garden equipped with a dog waste bin and that there are already over 20 dogs living here without any reported problems. My dog has never been the subject of complaints from neighbors, further proving her integration into our community.

As a resident of the tower block, I understand the need for regulations to ensure peace and cleanliness. However, outright banning dogs without considering individual cases or the emotional support they provide is not justifiable. Many people rely on their dogs for support, and forcing them to separate from their animals without valid reasoning can have detrimental impacts on mental health.

It’s high time Southend Council revisits these policies and allows residents to keep their support animals, providing they ensure their pets do not cause any disturbances or mess. Mental health and community well-being should be prioritized alongside maintaining building integrity. By signing this petition, you are supporting a change in policy to allow support animals, bringing about a more inclusive and understanding living environment for all residents in tower blocks. Let's work together to keep our beloved support animals close, where they belong. Please sign this petition and help us make a difference.
