The Issue

Growing up, one of the things that always brought a smile to my face was seeing our neighborhood skeletons dressed up in whimsical attire for every holiday. From Christmas hats to patriotic 4th of July outfits, these skeletons brought joy not just to me and my children, but to everyone in the community. They sparked creativity and encouraged local kids to express themselves in innocent and delightful ways.

However, a recent city ordinance threatens to take away this beloved tradition by requiring residents to take down skeleton decorations after Halloween. This new rule could rob our community of a source of joy and creativity that we cherish dearly. The ordinance seems to miss the full picture—as these skeletons encourage unity and enhance our holiday spirit all year round.

Studies have shown that festive decorations have a positive impact on community morale and foster a sense of belonging. Holiday decorations—even unconventional ones like these skeletons—offer people, especially children, something to look forward to. They teach flexibility, as the decorations change from holiday to holiday, underscoring the diversity of our celebratory traditions.

Instead of imposing restrictions, the city council should embrace the creativity and community spirit these skeletons bring. I propose that we amend the ordinance to allow residents to keep their skeleton decorations up and encourage them to creatively adapt them for various holidays. This change would not only preserve a tradition many hold dear but also align with values of inclusivity and holiday joy.

By revisiting this decision, we can reinforce what makes our community uniquely vibrant. Let's allow our skeletons to don Santa hats, Easter bonnets, and Uncle Sam toppers throughout the year.

Sign this petition to urge our city leaders to amend the ordinance and let us keep brining cheer through our beloved skeletons decorating tradition.
