Dear NYC DPR Commissioner White,
The Morningside Park Farmers Market, hosted by Down to Earth Markets, fills an important need for expanded access to fresh, local produce in the underserved neighborhoods of Harlem and Manhattan Valley while supporting local food producers and farmers. The current June - December market season only partially fills this need. The growth of the market over eight consecutive years clearly demonstrates the need and viability of a year-round market at this location.
The community has embraced their weekly Saturday farmers market on the corner of 110th Street & Manhattan Avenue. The market is due to close for the season on December 8th, 2012.
Many shoppers, however, want to expand it into a farmers market for all seasons. We would like to start a year-around farmers market on Saturday, January 5th, 2013.
We the undersigned call on the NYC Dept. of Parks & Recreation to grant a permit for a year-round market at Morningside Park.
