The Issue

Living in Oxon Hill, MD, and attending Potomac high school has its challenges, but one of the surprisingly frustrating ones is the restricted uniform policy, especially the limitations on sweater and hoodie colors. Finding clothing in the prescribed uniform colors, year after year, becomes not only tedious but unnecessarily burdensome. Especially as students grow or lapses in laundry schedules occur, having only a narrow band of colors to choose from for sweaters and hoodies limits expression and practicality.

Allowing students to wear different colored sweaters and hoodies other than the designated uniform colors would ease this shopping struggle significantly. It would offer students the opportunity to express individuality and ease the process of acquiring school-appropriate clothing without the constant worry if something fits within the acceptable 'color' standard.

Moreover, schools in different parts of the country and even around the world have successfully embraced more flexible dress codes, understanding that individuality can thrive alongside a respectful educational environment. Educators and psychologists argue that self-expression in clothing can lead to improved self-esteem and academic performance, reinforcing the notion that this small change could be beneficial overall.

This simple policy adjustment won't affect the academic focus or discipline within the school but would bring considerable comfort and ease to the students' day-to-day lives. Join us in advocating for a change to the sweater and hoodie color policy at Oxon Hill High School, and help us create a more supportive and accommodating atmosphere for all students. Sign this petition to make this modification a reality. Together, we can encourage a school environment that respects individual choices while maintaining a respectful and conducive learning setting.
