The Issue

As a full-time student, mother, wife, and caregiver to my breast cancer-surviving mother and family, I have personally felt the impact of the recent food price increase. Relying on my husband's income while I finish school has made our financial situation challenging. The ability to maintain a stable supply of some food items, like eggs, would significantly alleviate the financial burdens my family and many other Mansfield residents are currently facing.

Mansfield, Ohio is a community with deep ties to agriculture and self-sufficiency. Yet, despite these ties, local regulations currently prevent residents from keeping backyard chickens. This restriction not only limits our ability to access fresh, affordable food but also prevents us from maintaining a sustainable lifestyle amidst the fluctuating economic conditions.

The benefits of allowing backyard chickens are manifold. Chickens provide fresh eggs, which are a nutritious and cost-effective food source. Furthermore, they help control pests and reduce kitchen waste by consuming scraps, thereby fostering a more eco-friendly community. Many urban and suburban areas across the United States have successfully implemented policies permitting backyard chickens without incident, proving that this is a feasible and beneficial initiative.

By updating local ordinances to allow backyard chickens, Mansfield would join countless progressive communities supporting self-sufficiency and sustainable living. This change would empower residents like me to provide for our families more effectively while contributing positively to environmental efforts and local food security.

Permitting backyard chickens can serve as a practical solution in combating the rising cost of living, providing not only food security but also educational opportunities for children and families about caring for animals and understanding food sources.

I urge the local authorities to consider this request seriously and to imagine a Mansfield that champions both the welfare of its residents and the sustainability of its community. Please sign this petition to show your support for allowing backyard chickens and help us make a positive change for our community! Together, we can achieve a more self-reliant and sustainable Mansfield.
