The 127th session of the Maine Legislature, Judiciary Committee and the Appropriations Committee have all passed unanimously the funding of a cold case squad for Maine. In May an amendment was approved by the Appropriations Committee to add the cold case squad to the current budget. This means that on July 1, 2015 a cold case squad can start. We ask Governor LePage to work with them in a bipartisan effort to secure funding and sign the squad into law. Last year Maine’s 126th Legislative session passed bill LD-1734 and Governor Paul LePage signed it into law unfunded in April. As I am sure you can understand families were extremely disappointed this bill was left unfunded for a second time. The Maine Legislature was given a chance at Federal funding and decided to wait for those funds which turned out to be a fruitless effort. Governor LePage recently has said he will not support a cold case squad in Maine without receiving his MDEA agents he has asked for in his budget proposal.
The history of the cold case squad in Maine started back in 2001 and that bill was also signed into law and left unfunded. We currently have listed on the State website about 131 missing and murdered cold cases. However, the website leaves out many who are not within the dates, circumstances or other police agencies lists. We have many that is from the 50’s, 60’s that are not on this list some even from the 70’s like Roger Day who in 1973 went to the Fryeburg Fair at the age of 14 and never was seen again. This young man doesn’t appear on any list yet his family has been vocal about his case and has spent years waiting for police to find out what happened to him. Do they not deserve to know what happened to their son?
