One 17yr old young woman came forward and asked to share her story. We are posting it here to honor her, her pup Cena and her experience. Her commitment to her best friend was fierce and loving. You were very brave and you did the best you could. Cena was a puppy mill dog, he had unhealthy genetics and his brain was not wired correctly. Thank you for standing by him as long as you could.
My Story:
I would like to share my story regarding the perfect puppy. Two years ago at 15, my father agreed to buy me a puppy, insisting we use a breeder (or pet store). We traveled to the perfect puppy where I fell in love with an apparently sweet, calm and gentle Labrador retriever. We pay upwards of a thousand dollars for him.
Immediately we noticed Cena, wasn't what we had seen in the pet store. The previously calm (and probably drugged) puppy was out of control. That didn't prevent him from becoming my best friend, and a beloved member of the household. We struggled with his behavior as it was more than unpredictable. He had gone through extensive behavior training by the age of 1, all of which was useless.
Cena was the light of my life, but it was like having a full time handicapped child on my hands, at 16. Eventually Cena became aggressive with me, my father and unpredictably aggressive with random strangers. We took him to one final trainer in a last hope effort. It was then we found due to his horrible breeding Cena was "autistic" or the canine equivalent.
He was also not a pure bred lab by a long shot, the lanky 130 pound dog was probably mixed with some type of large mountain dog or cur. It was a year and a half I dedicated my life to making this dog the best it could be, I even surrendered my social life, or if I did choose to go out, put him in day care or boarding to work on his issues.
Cena ultimately had to be re homed to a lab rescue when I had to have surgery and no one else could fathom caring for him due to his many many issues.
The Perfect Puppy needs to be closed, to save so many other families from the heartbreak which is felt after dedicating almost two years to a dog, and have it become an owners best friend to have to be taken away.
