Preserve Peoria, AZ Recycling

The Issue

At a time when city recycling programs are being scaled back or disappearing, such as in our neighboring city of Surprise, there is an opportunity to preserve recycling for Peoria residents and keep it affordable. It’s called the Happy Valley Recycling & Transfer Facility, and would be located next to the 303 Freeway and in an industrial area near 115th Avenue and Happy Valley Parkway.

The facility would be about the size of a Walgreen’s and sit on five acres of land. It’s basically a place where recyclables and waste from homes and businesses would be recycled and transferred from small trucks to large trucks. All of the loading and off-loading would take place indoors. Right now, the lack of a recycling and transfer facility greatly increases the recycling costs for cities such as Peoria to get recyclables from the curbside to regional recycling centers. Those local recycling centers have become more important than ever since China stopped accepting recyclables, and city budgets are under pressure due to deteriorating economic conditions.

At a time when cities and towns need better recycling infrastructure to keep programs alive, this facility, paid for by the private sector not taxpayers, addresses acute infrastructure needs in the growing northern part of Peoria. Without the new facility, the environment will suffer as trucks drive farther, pollute more, rip up roads and increase costs at a time when recycling cannot afford more.  This infrastructure will also increase competition and lower recycling and waste disposal costs for EVERYONE in the Northwest Valley including small businesses, residents, and municipalities.

Please sign our petition and let elected leaders know you support recycling and you want to make it affordable so people at all income levels in the Northwest Valley can benefit, and help the environment too.
