Gorilla Harambe shot at Cincinnati Zoo- Taking Positive Action
The issue
Recently, a Gorilla was shot in Cincinnati Zoo in Ohio. The gorilla (Harambe) was killed, 'rescuing' a 4 year old boy after he intentionally fell in. The zoo chose to kill the animal rather than tranquilise it. I understand that tranquilising the gorilla ran the risk of it becoming violent, therefore shooting it was the only way to unsure the boy's safety. That I understand, further, I'm not going to re-tell the entire story, you most likely are familiar with it and you have your own opinion.
I wanted to share my opinion about the situation: Firstly, the mother spoke out saying "accidents do happen", I was convinced that this was poor and she was at fault, however people have created petitions and all have become largely successful. One of which is a house search and its on its way to 500,000 signatures. Reading through the comments, people are furious with the mother and want her to pay. I believe a house search is unnecessary, you are just finding a reason to separate the mother and son regardless if the mother really loves him. Yes, she neglected the boy at that moment, but I believe it was a mixture of reasons that left the boy in danger. One being the safety of the zoo, second the mother and third the boy. A house search IS NOT going to bring justice to Harambe, it will not bring back what happened and it is unnecessary. All it's doing is blaming it entirely on the mother and making her pay. Two wrongs don't make a right!
There are many other petitions that have better ideas. This includes, helping the population of that particular species of gorillas. That would be something Harambe would wish for, not punishing the mother. Sheila hurt, the maker of an incredibly successful petition, I thank you for taking action but I believe your intentions are negative. I understand we shouldn't just let the mother off this, but I'm sure there is something more positive we can do.
Instead of bringing "justice" how about we take positive action. How about getting the zoo to improve its safety? Or maybe even taking actions to help increase the population of this endangered species. I'm sure Harambe would prefer this. As I said, this is your opinion. I hope you can understand where I'm coming from. You do what you believe is right.
