Hold racist lecturer Tan Boon Lee and Ngee Ann Poly accountable

Hold racist lecturer Tan Boon Lee and Ngee Ann Poly accountable

The Issue

In the most recent racist news in Singapore, Ngee Ann Polytechnic suspends an Engineering lecturer, identified as Tan Boon Lee, who made racist remarks to an interracial couple in a viral video. As early as yesterday (9 June 2021), disturbing recounts from former Ngee Ann students have surfaced on how he treated minority students from his class. One of the students stated that Ngee Ann Poly failed to take any action after she raised the issue.

We are seeking to hold both Tan Boon Lee and Ngee Ann poly accountable.

1. What did the school do to investigate the student’s complaint in 2017?
2. Is there going to be a full review of how he had interacted with and graded minorities in his class?
3. Suspending him is not enough. The school must terminate his teaching contract and relationship with the Engineering school immediately.
4. Peter Liang, Director of School of Engineering (64607238, Peter_LIANG@np.edu.sg) must provide a statement condemning this issue.

Moving forward, how is the school going to:
1. ensure and support your educators to be ‘actively anti-racist’
2. establish an environment for minority students feel respected, safe, and valued

PS Thanks to those who signed, shared, and voiced out. We need your support now than ever to dismantle racism in Singapore.
