Un propriétaire de bar qui dérange

Un an après l’altercation entre les élus étudiants du Conseil d’administration et le propriétaire de l’Old Cosmo, ce dernier ne démord pas.

La scène des bars de Moncton a entrevu un changement important la semaine dernière. Jeff Gallant, le propriétaire de l’Old Cosmo, est maintenant devenu propriétaire du complexe Oxygen, maintenant renommé le complexe Old Cosmo.

Gallant a profité de l’occasion pour contacter Rémi Gaudet, vice-président activités sociales de la Fédération des étudiants et étudiantes du centre universitaire de Moncton (FÉÉCUM) et anciennement président du Conseil d’administration, en lien avec sa nouvelle acquisition. Le message n’était toutefois pas une invitation à faire des affaires.

En anglais, par le biais d’un média social, Gallant lui a rappelé qu’il est toujours banni de l’Old Cosmo et qu’il ne doit plus mettre les pieds au défunt complexe Oxygen.

« […] J’espère que tu aimes Robinson’s Court car je vais aussi l’acheter prochainement. Va plutôt au Triangle’s Bar sur la St. George… et amène Oli [Olivier Doiron] avec toi… le karma est une garce et elle vient tout juste de te mordre le cul, hardcore », dit Gallant.

Gaudet explique qu’il s’attendait à être contacté par Gallant, mais pas de cette façon.

« Je suis surpris qu’un an après qu’on se soit parlé pour la dernière fois, il m’envoie un message d’intimidation; je ne m’attendais pas à cela du tout. J’interprète son commentaire comme une remarque homophobe très déplacée envers moi. »

Gallant dit n’avoir rien à se reprocher
Le Front a rencontré Gallant afin d’éclairer les motifs qui étaient derrière l’envoi de ce message. Reconnaissant en être l’auteur, il explique qu’il l’a fait explicitement pour narguer Gaudet et que cela fait près d’un an qu’il attend pour pouvoir envoyer un tel message. Il nie toutefois que l’invitation lancée à Gaudet d’aller à un bar homosexuel était intentionnée comme une insulte à visée homophobe.

« Je suis vraiment content d’avoir acheté ce bar [complexe Oxygen], parce que maintenant je peux bannir tous les gens qui ont tenté de me ruiner » dit-il.

Rappelons que l’année dernière, suite à une mésentente entre le Conseil des étudiants de la faculté d’administration et Gallant, ce dernier avait décidé de bannir tout le conseil pour ensuite promettre de tenter de nuire au succès de toutes leurs soirées organisées au iRock. Gallant a aussi admis à la CBC avoir proféré des commentaires racistes et homophobes lors d’une altercation avec un DJ de Moncton. 
Gallant explique qu’il a suivi des ateliers de gestion de la colère depuis les événements de l’année dernière et que ce n’était pas la première fois qu’il en suivait. Il ajoute aussi avoir respecté la promesse qu’il avait faite devant la CBC à l’égard d’un don à un organisme multiculturel. Gallant aurait donné de l’argent à un enfant d’Afrique par le biais d’un organisme de bienfaisance. Lorsque questionné sur les raisons pour lesquelles il a fait une telle promesse suite à au déroulement de ces événements, il explique que c’est plutôt son relationniste qui lui aurait conseillé de poser ce geste.

« C’était mon PR guy qui m’a dit que je devrais faire cela. Moi, dans ma tête, ce que j’ai dit ne me dérange pas parce que c’était juste un message texte [en référence aux textos à visées racistes et homophobes de l’année dernière]. Qu’est-ce qu’une personne fait dans sa vie, sur ses textes, ça ne concerne pas les étudiants. D’ailleurs, la seule place que les Africains viennent c’est au Old Cosmo; ils ne vont pas au iRock, ils ne vont pas au O2, ils vont là [au Cosmo] » dit-il.

« Gallant est un menteur », dit le iRock
Gallant ajoute qu’il ne porte pas particulièrement intérêt à la clientèle étudiante et que, de toute façon, ces derniers n’auront plus le choix de faire affaire avec lui. Il affirme que la situation financière du iRock est chancelante et, à ses dires, le iRock serait en vente à l’instant présent car le propriétaire serait sur son lit de mort à l’hôpital. Le Front a démenti ses allégations.

Le Front a contacté le gérant du iRock, Marc Shine Reeder , afin d’obtenir plus d’information à ce sujet. Shine affirme que toutes ces allégations sont fausses, que le propriétaire est en excellente santé et réitère qu’il n’y a aucune discussion concernant la vente du iRock. Shine accuse d’ailleurs Gallant d’émettre des rumeurs malveillantes à l’égard du iRock.

Le conseil étudiant d’Administration garde ses distances
Taha Maarous, président du conseil d’Administration, est troublé par l’attitude de Gallant. Lui-même étudiant international, il explique qu’il ne peut se présenter à un club dont le propriétaire émet librement des commentaires racistes.

« Il a fait des excuses, mais elles étaient légères comparées au mal qu’il a fait à beaucoup. Pourquoi n’a-t-il pas écrit une lettre d’excuse à la faculté d’administration ainsi qu’à la FÉÉCUM? »

Concernant le Party bourse organisé par le Conseil d’administration, Maarous souligne toutefois qu’un appel d’offres sera fait, mais que les relations avec les propriétaires entreront dans le calcul.

« Bien qu’une décision n’a pas encore été prise par le conseil, nous croyons qu’il est important d’entretenir de bonnes relations avec les gens avec qui nous faisons affaire », dit-il.

A year and a half after the quarrel between the elected student council of Université de Moncton’s administration studies department and Jeff Gallant, owner of the Old Cosmo, Gallant is still at it.

Last week, Moncton’s bar scene underwent quite the change : Jeff Gallant now owns the Oxygen Complex (renamed the Old Cosmo Complex).

Because of his recent acquisition, Gallant took the opportunity to contact Rémi Gaudet, vice-president of social activities for Université de Moncton’s student federation (FÉÉCUM) and ex-president of the administration studies department. The message, however, was not an invitation to do business.

On a social media platform, Gallant reminded Gaudet that he is permanently banned from the Old Cosmo and that this ban now extends to the former Oxygen complex. Here is the message in its original form (with additions in brackets) :

“[…] i hope you like robinson court, and I am buyin that next, so, off to the Triangles bar on St George… bring Oli [local DJ Olivier Doiron] with you… Karma is a bitch and it just bit you in the ass,, hardcore…..”
Gaudet expected to be contacted by Gallant, but not in this manner.

“I’m surprised that after a year of silence, he sent me an intimidating message. It was really unexpected and I found his comment to be homophobic and completely uncalled for.”

Gallant said he’s not in the wrong
Le Front met with Gallant to better understand why he sent this message. Gallant, confirming that he was the author of the message, explained that he sent it specifically to rub it in Gaudet’s face and that he had been waiting nearly a year to be able to do so; however, he denies that his suggestion that Gaudet visit a gay bar was intended as a homophobic insult.

“I’m really glad to have bought the Oxygen complex because now I can ban everyone who’s tried to ruin me,” said Gallant.

Last year, because of a misunderstanding between the administration studies department’s student council and Gallant, the bar owner had decided to ban all the council members and then made a promise that he would try to ruin their future events at the iRock. Also, Gallant admitted to the CBC that he had made racist and homophobic remarks during an argument with a Moncton DJ. Gallant stated that he has followed anger management programs since last year’s events and that he had followed such programs in the past. He also indicated that he kept the promise he made before the CBC and donated money to a multicultural organisation to help feed an African child. When asked why he made such a promise after last year’s events, he said that it was his public relations worker’s idea :

“My PR guy told me I should do that. In my mind, the things I’ve said don’t bother me because they were just text messages [in reference to last year’s racist and homophobic text messages]. What I do in my life and say in my texts has nothing to do with the students. Moreover, the only place the Africans come to is the Old Cosmo. They don’t go to the iRock, they don’t go to the O2, they come here [the Old Cosmo].”

“Gallant is a liar,” says the iRock
Gallant added that he’s not particularly worried about the student customers and that they won’t have a choice but to deal with him anyway. He stated that the iRock’s financial situation is shaky and, according to him, the club will be for sale shortly since the owner is at the hospital on his death bed.

We contacted Marc Shine Reeder, the iRock’s manager, to get more information on this matter. Shine said the allegations are false and that the owner is in great shape. There are also no current plans to sell the iRock. Furthermore, Shine accuses Gallant of spreading malicious rumors about the iRock.

The administration studies’ student council keep their distance
Taha Maarous, president of Université de Moncton’s administrative studies student council, is disturbed by Gallant’s attitude. As an international student, he can’t bring himself to visit a club whose owner openly says racist comments.

“He apologized, but his apologies didn’t cover all the harm he’s done to many people. Why didn’t he write a formal apology to the administration studies department as well as the FÉÉCUM?”

When it comes to the Party bourse, organised by the administration studies student council, Maarous said they are going to consider all establishments to host the party; however, their relationship with the owners will be a will be taken into consideration.

“While we haven’t yet reached a decision, we think it’s important to maintain good relationships with the people we make business with.”
