Stop MV Shipyard Expansion into Lagoon Pond

The Issue

MV Shipyard has plans to put a new 48 boat marina in the West Arm of Lagoon Pond, to build a 43 car parking lot on its premises, to dredge shellfish beds in the West Arm and to put over 70 new pilings in the West Arm.  The project will further degrade the water quality of an already compromised natural resource in an area well known to be a shellfish nursery supporting quahog, scallop, conch, whelk and other species.  The West Arm already has a 60 boat marina on top of existing mooring fields and this new marina would allow for up to 154 boats to be housed in the Lagoon.  Shellfishing has been closed in the waters surrounding the existing marina due to fecal contamination and several shellfish experts have stated that the new marina could well threaten closure of this prolific nursery.  Approval of the new marina into the Lagoon squanders a natural resource enjoyed by all for a private business utilized by a few and must be stopped.
