End Puppy Mill Operations in Eastern Kentucky

The Issue

Most Eastern Kentuckians love dogs like their own family. Many purchase their beloved pets from shelters, rescues, or reputable breeders. However, many others fall victim to the puppy mill operations right here in Eastern Kentucky. In the puppy mill industry, the dog mothers and fathers are treated like moneymaking machines, bred over and over with little regard for their health or well-being. In result, puppies are born into unsanitary conditions making them extremely susceptible to many infections and diseases. Many puppies suffer from severe illness and unnecessary death.

Unfortunately, many Eastern Kentuckians purchasing from pet boutiques have experienced unexpected death or extreme illness of their puppy. Families share these heartbreaking stories and some agonize over the illness or loss of multiple pets due to transmission from the puppy. Some pet boutiques will reimburse owners if the puppy dies or becomes ill depending if the puppy was seen by a veterinarian within 72 hours of purchase. However, reimbursing owners doesn’t justify an innocent puppy dying. Puppy mills and pet boutiques making profit from sick animals is cruel and inhumane.

While Kentucky has basic anti-cruelty statutes, it remains in the minority states with no specific laws to regulate puppy mills. In 2021, the city of Elizabethtown (KY) passed The Humane Pet Store Ordinance that prohibits retail stores from selling dogs or cats of any age in their stores. So, what can we do? The people of Eastern Kentucky play a vital role in holding pet boutiques and puppy mills accountable. Pet adoptions from shelters or rescues should be a priority when seeking a pet or fur-ever family member. We must demand transparency from pet boutiques and shops that threaten the safety and sanitation of other pets and animals in Eastern Kentucky. Reputable breeders do not sell to pet boutiques or pet stores. We hope that this petition will bring awareness and prevent other innocent puppies becoming ill or dying. We must come together to make Eastern Kentucky a more humane place for animals.

If you have purchased a puppy from a pet boutique or pet store that unexpectedly became ill, died, or passed from an illness/disease to another pet who suffered, please comment and share your story!
