The COVID-19 pandemic is a current issue that affects health directly, but what not so many people know is that it also has an impact on the environment. Healthcare waste is the one produced in health care facilities, research centers and laboratories and belongs to the hazardous waste. Before the pandemic, 15% of all the waste generated in the world was hazardous, but during the pandemic this percentage increased. To give some idea, the COVID related waste produced is currently 2.5kg/bed/day and there is a usage of 7 billion facemask per day globally. Due to this issue some countries such as China, Afghanistan, Indonesia, India and Japan have implemented guides and policies to improve waste management but, in Ecuador, this issue has not been considered. However, we think that by informing and making people conscious about this topic, they can help with small actions to stop the progression of this problem.
