Stop Elephant Shows in Thailand

Stop Elephant Shows in Thailand
The Issue
A recent undercover operation revealed the horrific abuse of elephants in Thailand. In an attempt to promote tourism, elephants are forced to put on shows and are both physically and mentally neglected. Young calfs are forcefully separated from their mothers and coerced to learn and perform tricks that are not intended for these animals. If the calfs "misbehave" or are unable to perform the tasks, they are struck with large metal rods. These animals are chained, starved and physically abused daily. Mother's experience a lot of distress due to the separation from their young. These shows are a very popular attraction in Thailand. DNP (Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation) in Thailand is convinced that the promotion of these shows and the mistreatment of these elephants will only increase after the COVID-19 pandemic to make up for loss of revenue. It is heartbreaking to witness this blatant abuse and lack of empathy for these majestic creatures. We urge the government of Thailand to ban these elephant shows and to release or create a safe sanctuary for these animals.
