Why this petition matters

Started by Stephanie Smith

Hello everyone, I am writing this petition to stop the carriage horses in Duluth, MN due to their conditions. I am an employee at a restaurant in canal and I see these poor horses walking by every day. Today was my last straw. One of the horses was very uncomfortable and foot sore while pulling the carriage on the gravel trail. The horse was tripping and clearly limping. I was also working the weekend of the Fourth of July and the horses were out in the 92 degree weather for hours, pulling carts. The warmth in the sun was in the 100’s. These poor animals were pulling lazy tourists around while being forced to work in horrible conditions. I also noticed an overweight driver aboard one of the carts while the horses pull the weight of the driver, multiple people in the carriage, and the carriage itself. This is pure animal abuse. The horses also stand in the heat on the hot pavement for hours on end until some greedy tourists pay money to cart them around. I am shocked that one of these animals did not collapse in the horrible heat. This needs to be put to an end. Although the business people that own the Top Hat Carriage Company say that their horses are taken care of and happy, I can tell you that they are forced to work in awful conditions. Just because people have been in the horse world for years, doesn’t mean they know everything and take care of their animals. Please consider signing this petition. Thank you!
