Make safety belts in shopping trolley child seating a legal requirement

The Issue

Hi thanks for reading!

Did you know that the law does not require child seats in shopping trolleys to provide seat belts or safety harnesses? Me neither! Not until I needed one the most. Please read my story and sign the petition to make such a small change which in turn will keep children safe.

I am a mother of two and the safety of children is of utmost importance to me. Until I was directly impacted by something most parents wouldn't realise was not protected by law. ( I will write an in detail story below of what happened) My son was hurt due to the design of the trolley, which is in all tk maxx stores. not one of them has a safety seat belt in the child's seat section, this was the first establishment I had been to that did not meet a very simple yet important health and safety feature. When I started researching after I was quite surprised to see that there are no laws or regulations that require stores to provide a safety belt/harness/strap of any kind in the child's seats of shopping trolleys. I am also aware there are other stores where they neglect to provide such a feature. it is something i always used when putting my children into trolleys but even i didn't quite realise what a saving grace they really are.

I would like to stress, my son did not climb out, he flipped and fell from quite a height. if he had been younger or god forbid fell differently he could have been seriously injured, bruising to the head seems like a blessing yet it should not have happened. He was not left unattended I was with him at all times and it happened in a matter of seconds of me pulling the trolley while facing behind. The store have cctv of the incident and an accident report was also filed.

On Saturday 10th September it was my birthday, we were out shopping as a family like most weekends. We visited a TK Maxx store in my hometown of Chesterfield. I have 2 children aged 3 and 18 months so the easiest thing for me to do is place the youngest in a child seat in the trolley and have my 3 year old walk with his Dad. As most parents will have experienced, my 18 month old was not happy with this arrangement and made it quite clear. As I was backing the trolley closer to my 3 year old my youngest flipped himself out of the trolley and landed on the ground. It was honestly the most scary thing I have witnessed. He cried, I cried and scooped him up. The bruising to his head came up almost instantly. I spoke to the management and due to my anxiety I could not stop shaking so they let me have a seat and provided a cold compress for my sons head. They were extremely understanding and helpful but sadly the company they represent is at fault. However it is part of the much bigger problem that they are not required by law. Sadly some companies will always choose saving money over safety.

please please sign, share and help me prevent this happening to anyone ever again, thank you
