Polls are showing a worrying decline in the general public's overall trust in all news media over a number of years. Trust in the media is an essential part of our democracy. The consequence of this downturn is to push more people towards possible Fake News and Extremist Views on the internet.

The majority of News Media output providers appear to have buried their heads in the sand over this decline in trust. The strategy seems to be, if we do not report it the issue will gain no traction.

An independent review should be carried out of all News media, including the BBC, to find out the reasons for the decline in trust, its effects on our democracy and report on possible remedies.

In light of the current and ongoing National Emergency, the role and purpose of the BBC as the UK public service broadcaster, in providing clear and concise public messaging should be considered as a priority. Governments and the BBC should work together to achieve this essential aim.
