Recent media reports have erroneously suggested that there is little neighborhood support for a bar and music venue at the old Boot & Saddle, 1131 S Broad Street. We, the undersigned, feel that a bar/venue at this location would be an excellent fit for the neighborhood, helping to reestablish this stretch of South Broad Street as a cultural and commercial corridor.
The following factors lead us to believe that the liquor transfer to 1131 S Broad Street is appropriate and recommendable:
1) LOCATION: 1131 S Broad sits on one of Philadelphia's biggest commercial corridors, immediately next to a subway station and on a block primarily devoted to commercial properties. Additionally, the property is already appropriately zoned C-2 and has historically served as a bar and music venue.
2) ENVIRONMENT: South Broad Street is one of the city's busiest stretches, with substantial automotive traffic, a subway line, and numerous buses. Although we are respectful of some neighbors' concerns about noise--and urge BootPhilly LLC to make every effort to allay their concerns--this is already a bustling area. The prospect of a reasonable number of patrons would not pose a hardship.
3) EFFECT: We firmly believe that this venue will have positive ramifications for the immediate area's environment: providing the "eyes on the street" that have repeatedly been demonstrated to reduce crime and nuisance, sparking the type of commercial use that all neighbors would welcome, reducing blight, and rejuvenating a long-neglected area of South Philadelphia. One need not look further than Philadelphia to see how similar venues have positively affected their neighborhoods and promoted responsible development: Johnny Brendas' on East Girard Avenue or Mr. Hornik's Union Transfer on East Spring Garden.
Again, we urge BootPhilly LLC to make every accommodation possible to ensure that neighbors' concerns about noise and safety are mitigated. But because the location is well-suited for and historically tied to a bar/venue, because the area will not be unduly burdened, and because we believe this project will have a positive transformative effect on the area, we offer this petition of support for the liquor transfer of license R-6143 to 1131 S Broad Street.
