End Child Marriage in Pennsylvania

As I was looking up how to acquire a Marriage License for my upcoming wedding, I found something alarming on my county marriage license website.

In Pennsylvania, a child can obtain a marriage licence beginning at 14 with parental and judicial consent, and at 16 with parental consent.

I find the thought of a child being coerced, forced, or trapped in a marriage horrifying.

I started doing some research I found that the Department of State agrees by calling child marriage in the United States a “human rights abuse” that “produces devastating repercussions for a girl’s life, effectively ending her childhood” by forcing her “into adulthood and motherhood before she is physically and mentally mature.”

Child, early, and forced marriage is a problem in the U.S. Over 248,000 children had been married in the United States between 2000 and 2010, mostly to adult men.

In the US federal system, state legislatures set the minimum age of marriage for each state. The minimum age of marriage in most US states is 18, but exceptions in every state allow those younger than 18 to marry. Laws in 25 states do not set a minimum age below which a child cannot marry.

Please supporting bringing Pennsylvania in line with other states, and human decency, by increasing the age of marriage to the age of consent - 18.
