PENNDOT NEEDS TO LOWER OUR SPEED LIMITS NOW !!!
PENNDOT NEEDS TO LOWER OUR SPEED LIMITS NOW !!!
The Issue
If you are concerned about the constant speeding cars and heavy weight dump, tandem, and tractor trailer truck traffic on Route 412 and Flint Hill Road in Lower Saucon Township and the continual, residual problems it is causing to Route 412 and the many homes along these roads, sign this petition now.
My name is Clarann Filko. Glenn Orwan and I live in Leithsville along Route 412. Glenn has been contacting PennDot since 2011, asking PennDot to lower the speed limit on Route 412 because of the constant heavy weight dump, tandem and tractor trailer truck traffic, not to mention the speeding cars at all hours of the day and night. This causes his 200 year old house to shake from front to back. Some people have told us that they can hear the trucks and the constant brake noise at all hours of the night coming down Flint Hill Road. And, let’s not forget that the Leithsville Fire House burned to the ground in 2012 because a demp truck lost it brakes coming down Flint Hill Road, crashed and dragged a car underneath it, before it plowed into the firehouse. The man in the car at the bottom of the hill was killed. Glenn has on occasion, followed some of these trucks to clock their speed. He was driving 60 MPH and could not keep up with the tractor trailer truck he was following. I live in the house next door, which also shakes, but, I am concerned with a gas line that runs along Route 412 in front of many homes. Route 412 was opened to traffic in 1927. It was not built for these heavy weight trucks and it was not built for people to drive 50-55 MPH on it, and people do ! In the 45 years we have lived here, we have had two cars demolished. The first was in 1974, and the second was in 2015. PennDot has recently repaved the stretch of Route 412 from Polk Valley Road to the Bucks County Line. Now, trucks and cars are driving even faster, because the road is smoother. Parents with school children being picked up at the school bus on Route 412 and Weavers Lane have been stepping out onto Route 412 and waving their arms to get drivers to slow down and/or stop for the school bus. Drivers are in such a hurry, they are not slowing down or stopping for the school buses !!
Glenn went to Representative Justin Simmons for help. He was told Representative Simmons had no time for him. We went to Representative Bob Freeman, he helped us. Glenn has been in contact with PennDot Engineers, asking them to lower the speed limit along Route 412. It would also help to ban heavy weight truck traffic on Flint Hill Road. Recently, the engineer he talked to told him he couldn’t lower the speed limit for one complainant. Glenn has emailed Governor Wolf. His e-mail was referred to PennDot. Lower Saucon Township has been receptive to our concerns and has helped us as far as they are able to, Route 412 and Flint Hill Road are Pennsylvania State Highways. That’s PennDot’s domain. PennDot has to lower the speed limit.
What can we do ? MAKE OUR VOICES HEARD !! Glenn and I know there are more than just two of us who share our concerns about this issue. Work for constructive change. Make PennDot hear our voices. Get them to lower the speed limit. Most of the municipalities around us have lower speed limits. Hellertown, Springtown, Richlandtown . The speed limit is 25 or 30 MPH. What is Lower Saucon Township ? An orphan ? Most of these problems would stop if the speed limit was lowered. Our own Roger Rasich, Lower Saucon Township’s Director of Public Works said 25 years ago that the speed limit on Route 412 in Leithsville should be 25 MPH because of all the many homes along that stretch of highway. He was right ! To fix this problem, the speed limit needs to be lowered and enforced.
